EARNED MEDIA
Below are press releases and media pitches I wrote for mock clients and real clients in the PR program at BYU, and while I interned at Wallaroo Media.
Wilson Public Relations; Rocky Mountain Power — Mock News Release
|
Situation: Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) delivers electricity to customers in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho. In an effort to engage and educate customers, RMP reached out to Wilson Public Relations to create the "Bag the Bulb" campaign. The campaign focuses on motivating Utah RMP customers to be more energy-efficient at home by using energy-efficient lighting in the form of light emitting diode bulbs (LED bulbs).
Customers collect 10 incandescent light bulbs and trade them in at "Bag the Bulb" events at local hardware stores along the Wasatch Front for 10 LED bulbs. Customers also have the opportunity to talk to energy-usage advisors at events to learn how they can make their homes more energy-efficient. RMP wants the media to pick up the story so they can play a part in educating publics about how they can save money and energy by switching to LED bulbs. Goal and Objectives:
Implementation: The point of this news release is to inform Utah mothers ,who are practical idealists, of what other mothers are doing to be more energy-efficient. The news release discusses details of the event and how it has already helped a lot of mothers on their journey to create an energy-efficient home. Another point I wanted to stress was the amount of money Utah mothers could save once they switch to LED bulbs. |
Wilson Public Relations; Rocky Mountain Power — Mock Media Pitch
This pitch was created for a mock client for a class.
Pitching the media is essential to getting the message of an event out to the public. The media is an intervening public that can make or break an event. I did research on local reporters that write stories about home, lifestyle and energy/money saving tips and tricks. I also had to find reporters that had a large following. I chose a writer for the Deseret News, because I found that many Salt Lake City women prefer the Deseret News over other local news providers. I explained the details of the event and how writing about the event would be beneficial and relevant to her readers. |

WALLAROO MEDIA
As an intern at Wallaroo Media, I wrote several REAL press releases and outreach pitches for REAL clients. I wrote a press release or pitch every single week. Sometimes, I wrote multiple press releases and pitches a week.
I knew I couldn't share every single press release and pitch that I wrote, because that would be a lot; however, here are my two best press releases and my best pitch that I wrote for a real outreach project. The first press release is for our client Plexus Solutions. Plexus is a software and hardware company that provides IT services for businesses. The purpose of the press release was to inform businesses of the affordable and hands-on services that Plexus Solutions provides. |

When I started my internship at Wallaroo, I knew that writing pitches would be difficult to me. My on-site supervisor worked with me to create pitches that drew bloggers and companies to respond and engage with our client.
One of our biggest clients, Giftry App, just barely re-launched their app and we created blog posts, articles and quizzes to promote the launch. I wrote pitches to several bloggers and other apps to get the word out on the app. This pitch to Avocado App got a high response rate and we were able to work with Avocado in a quiz collaboration. |
